Unlike on television, police must yield to county lines

On television, police dramas never involve issues like jurisdictional limitations of one police department over another when pursuing a fleeing vehicle. Police in Amherst, New York, work in the real world of town and county lines at which their jurisdiction either ends or must give way to other police agencies. Such a situation occurred recently as police from Amherst realized that their pursuit of a woman suspected of driving while intoxicated was entering the jurisdiction of another police department.

Jason Kidd ordered to talk to students about drunk driving

In exchange for a light sentence, the New York Nets' new head coach, Jason Kidd, plead guilty to a drunk driving charge. The single car accident happened in 2012. After leaving a charity event in the Hamptons, Kidd crashed his SUV into a telephone pole. He admitted to the judge that he had consumed three or four drinks before he left the function.

Commercial BAC testing devices now available to the public

New York motorists may be interested to hear that several companies are releasing commercial breathalyzer devices for motorists. While many hope that these devices will keep drunk drivers off of the road, others fear that motorists may use them to avoid being arrested for DWI by drinking just enough to still be under the legal limit.

Man charged with vehicular homicide

New York residents may be interested in the story of a New Jersey man who stands accused of driving while under the influence and is charged with vehicular homicide for the death of his passenger when the car he was driving struck a telephone pole on Pennington Avenue on June 17. A second passenger was seriously injured, sustaining a broken collar bone, a broken rib and a punctured lung. The driver, who walked away from the scene after the incident, was later found by the police and taken into custody. Jersey City police allege that he later admitted that he'd driven the car at the time of the accident.
