Teen charged with DWI after crashing car

A New York teenager was taken into custody on Dec. 10 after allegedly driving drunk and crashing his vehicle. Following the crash, the teen reportedly fled the scene, leaving behind an unconscious 14-year-old girl.

The 18-year-old man was driving a 2010 Honda Civic on Express Drive North on the Long Island Expressway in Holtsville when police said he suddenly lost control of the car at about 9 p.m. He left the roadway and crashed into a tree. The teen then fled the crash site. Authorities searched the area and finally located him at about 9:50 p.m. on Lakeside Drive. He was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of injuries that appeared to be minor. The 14-year-old was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

As a result of the crash, the teen was charged with DWI, aggravated DWI with a child passenger who was under the age of 15, leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in personal injury and endangering the welfare of a child. He was scheduled to be arraigned on the charges on Dec. 11.

An individual who is facing a drunk driving conviction could lose their driver’s license, face jail time and be required to pay fines and increased insurance premiums. Additionally, they might be required to have an ignition interlock device installed on all of their vehicles. A criminal law attorney may either go to trial to fight the DWI charges or negotiate a plea deal offer with the prosecution. The lawyer could challenge the charges if there is evidence that the authorities violated the driver’s rights or if the evidence does not match the accusations.
