Driver of unregistered vehicle faces DWI and other charges

In New York, two Connecticut men face numerous criminal charges following a traffic stop in the town of Southeast. As reported, the charges ensued after New York State Police troopers pulled over a vehicle driven by a 22-year-old Danbury man on several unspecified traffic violations. Police later took both the driver and his 35-year-old passenger into custody in Putnam County. November court dates have been set for both men.

Reports indicate that the vehicle had a stolen license plate and was not registered as required by law. Cocaine and rolled-up dollar bills believed to contain drug residue were also found during the investigation. Police determined that the passenger had a bench warrant out for his arrest in New York City and that the driver had a blood alcohol content of more than three times the legal limit. The driver was issued an appearance ticket and released, and the passenger was taken to jail on a $2,000 bond or $1,000 cash bail option.

The driver's charges include aggravated driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, possession of stolen property, obstructing governmental administration, disorderly conduct and multiple traffic and vehicle violations. The passenger is facing charges of possessing a controlled substance, failing to surrender to a bench warrant, violation of criminal procedure law and a disorderly conduct violation.

In this case, the criminal charges are misdemeanors. Regardless of the severity of these charges, a drunk driving conviction could have a negative and long-lasting impact on the driver's future prospects. New York residents who find themselves in a similar situation may want to seek help from an attorney at their earliest opportunity.
