Director Martin Scorsese's nephew charged for DWI

A 41-year-old man was charged for DWI after a traffic stop in New York Nov. 24. According to reports, the man is the nephew of film director Martin Scorsese. The incident that led to the man's DWI charge took place at about 11 p.m. in Oakwood Heights.

Police stopped the defendant at the junction of Guyon Avenue and Hylan Boulevard after the man was seen driving erratically. According to a spokeswoman for the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information, the defendant was seen swerving between other cars and driving up onto the sidewalk. When the man's car was stopped, police thought that they noticed the man speaking with a slur.

The defendant was transported to the Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze to receive treatment after the traffic stop. A report from the Daily News indicated that the man was hospitalized because he had taken drugs. Later on, the man was booked for a charge of operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs. The man has a previous conviction for third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. He completed drug treatment programs as part of a deal to avoid jail time, and he was sentenced to four years of probation.

A person who is facing a DWI drug charge may be able to negotiate a reduced sentence as part of a plea deal. If a defendant can prove that their actions were motivated by a drug addiction, the defendant may receive leniency. A defendant might agree to complete a drug treatment program as part of the terms of a plea deal.
