Man charged in deadly crash has history of DWI charges

In New York, a man is facing new DWI charges following a three-car crash that claimed the life of one woman and caused her husband to be seriously injured. The couple's 23-year-old son was also hurt in the accident, which happened on June 26. According to sources, the alleged drunk driver had previously been charged with DWI in 2006.

The 34-year-old Lindenhurst man allegedly told police that he had consumed five beers at his job prior to the incident. News sources report that he was behind the wheel of a Ford Explorer when his vehicle crashed into a Ford Escape that was stopped at a red light on the Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station. His vehicle also reportedly sideswiped a stationary Honda Odyssey at the same intersection. The operator of the Odyssey was not injured in the accident.

However, the 56-year-old woman's husband, who was driving the Escape, suffered a traumatic brain injury during the incident, and her adult son suffered a back injury. Accompanied by their dog, the three were en route to visit a fourth family member in Virginia when the accident occurred. Following the incident, the charged man allegedly failed a field sobriety test and refused consent for a blood test. Reports indicate that authorities later obtained a search warrant for that test.

Although sources do not reveal the resolution of the 2006 charges against the allegedly drunk driver, in New York, penalties increase for each subsequent drunk driving conviction. New York residents who have multiple drunk driving charges may find it beneficial to seek advice regarding their options from a criminal justice attorney. In some cases, the attorney may be able to identify deficiencies in the prosecution's evidence that could lead to a favorable outcome.
