Increased police presence expected for Saint Patrick's Day

This Thursday, a significant percentage of Poughkeepsie-area residents will likely be among the millions worldwide who are expected to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day. For many, such celebratory events will include assorted green clothing, food and beverages; including beer and other alcoholic drinks. In an effort to crack down on alcohol-related offenses, including drunk driving, during this week the New York State Police will be out in full force.

Last year, state police issued more than 14,000 tickets and arrested 264 people for driving while intoxicated. An individual who is convicted of a DWI may face fines of up to $10,000 and have his or her driver's license revoked. Additionally, a DWI can negatively impact an individual's relationship with family members and friends as well as work colleagues.

This Saint Patrick's Day, area residents who plan to take part in and drink at local celebrations are reminded to make plans for a safe ride home. It's important to make these plans in advance and to ensure that friends also have a sober and safe way to get home. In cases where a planned sober driver decides to start drinking, an individual should explore other transportation alternatives including taxis, ride-share services and public transportation.

On holidays like Saint Patrick's Day, that traditionally involve the consumption of alcoholic beverages; the stakes are always higher. Not only are more people drinking and therefore likely to be impaired by alcohol, but more people are also likely to be driving and walking in the vicinity of these celebratory events. To ensure that everyone has a happy and safe Saint Patrick's Day, it's important to drink responsibly and to plan for a sober and safe ride home.
