Working Hard to Protect Your Rights As a Poughkeepsie criminal defense attorney, I have been serving the people of the Hudson Valley for more than 20 years through diligent, assertive and quality criminal defense. I am prepared to put my experience to work for you.

This Labor Day holiday, it may take work to avoid DWI patrols

It might take some doing, but that shouldn't prevent us all from making the effort to avoid getting arrested for driving while impaired. That said, if you do find yourself facing DWI charges, the best thing to remember is that you have rights, including the right to an attorney.

The chances are higher than usual for someone being brought up on drunk driving charges this weekend. That's because state troopers are slated to be out in greater numbers during the long Labor Day weekend.

Such actions have become common practice during every major holiday. This year, officials say this weekend's activities across the Lower Hudson Valley will mark the end of a three-week enforcement effort that has been undertaken as part of the national "Drunk Driving: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.

Officials say sobriety checkpoints and extra troopers will be in place. But what officials say drivers may not likely see are troopers in unmarked squad cars. It's not clear if that bit of information is meant to convey that the unmarked squads won't be on the road or if they just won't be seen until their emergency lights are turned on.

In addition to suspected drunk drivers, authorities say officers will be looking to curb distracted driving, driving without seatbelts and any violations of "Move Over Law." That's the law that aims to protect law enforcement officers and other emergency personnel from becoming victims of accidents.

As something of a preamble to the weekend, officials say they have already charged five people with either drunk or drugged driving this week.
