Pop star Justin Bieber charged with DUI and drag-racing

Justin Bieber fans in New York may be surprised to hear that the 19-year-old pop star is allegedly in trouble with the law. He was taken into custody in Miami on Jan. 23 and charged with DUI, non-violent resisting arrest and driving with an expired driver's license after a night of partying and drag-racing with friends. One of those friends, R&B artist Khalil, was also taken into custody in the incident.

Khalil was driving a red Ferrari, and Justin was driving a rented yellow Lamborghini. Some members of Bieber's entourage allegedly blocked street traffic with their vehicles at 26th Street and Pine Tree Drive for the purpose of making a makeshift drag strip where the two cars were allegedly going about 55 to 60 mph in a 30 mph residential zone.

According to police officers, Beiber told them he was driving home from the recording studio and wasn't drunk although he allegedly admitted to the presence of prescription drugs, marijuana and beer in his system. Allegedly, he was also uncooperative and cursed at officers during the incident.

Justin was taken to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and was released later that day on $2500 bond. A first DUI offense could carry a maximum six months sentence, 50 community service hours, a fine from $250 to $500, and when the accused is under 21, an automatic license suspension of six months if found guilty. A drag-racing first offense could result in a license suspension of one year, six months in jail and a fine from $500 to $1,000 if convicted. A DWI defense attorney could help an individual charged with drunk driving to build a solid defense.
