Man charged with drunk driving after wrong-way crash in New York

A 32-year-old man was charged with drunk driving after he reportedly drove the wrong way on the Saw Mill River Parkway and ran into another car. The accident occurred around 5 p.m. on Route 119 in Elmsford on the parkway. Police were reportedly alerted to the scene when they received a 911 call from a driver who stated that a black BMW was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of the parkway just north of Ashford Avenue in Dobbs Ferry.

When an officer arrived on the scene, he found a two-car collision that had just occurred. Neither of the drivers involved in the crash were seriously injured. However, the driver who was driving the wrong way was charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.

If the man is convicted of his DWI charge, then he could be facing a variety of consequences. New York imposes strict penalties on those who are convicted of drunk driving, some of which include license suspension or revocation, fines and fees, probation sentences and even jail sentences. The severity of the consequences can be increased if certain conditions are met. For example, if the man already has a prior DWI conviction on his driving record, then he could be subject to higher fines and fees, a longer license suspension or revocation period and a longer jail or probation sentence.

A DWI attorney might be able to assist the man in fighting his drunk driving charge. For example, one strategy that a DWI attorney might use is questioning the legitimacy of any chemical blood test evidence given. If there isn't any proof that the driver was in fact intoxicated at the time of the accident, then the DWI charge could be dismissed completely.
