Traffic violation in Utica results in crash

An individual who is convicted of a traffic offense may be subject to penalties such as fines and the loss of driving privileges for a period of time. These penalties can become more severe when a suspect crashes a vehicle or flees from police.

The Utica Police Department has two people in custody and is searching for a third in connection with the crash of a stolen car. Police report that they observed the car going through a red light and speeding on Nov. 5. They attempted to pull the car over and initiated a pursuit after the driver failed to comply.

The officers realized the car was stolen during the pursuit, which ended when the pursued vehicle crashed on Noyes Street, just before its intersection with the arterial road in Utica. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The two occupants of the car were apprehended, while a third occupant escaped.

New York State police are heading the investigation and receiving assistance from local law enforcement agencies including New Hartford, Utica and Yorkville police. Authorities say they already know the identity of the third suspect in the crash and will release additional information as it becomes available.

Being pulled over by police can be a frightening experience, and may leave an individual wanting to get away quickly. However, fleeing from police officers rarely makes a situation better. In fact, further charges can stem from such an act. Defendants in a traffic violation case like this one need to understand legal strategies that are available in these cases. Strong defenses can be built to challenge traffic violations.
