Repeat DWI offenders face tougher rules in New York

Stronger regulations against those facing DWI charges or those with DWI convictions are almost always popular, but can have huge impacts on the lives of those facing DWI charges. For that reason, those who have previously been convicted of drunk driving should be aware of a new rule that is now in effect in New York.

The DMV recently introduced tougher rules that are designed to make it more difficult for repeat DWI offenders to keep their licenses in the state of New York. DMV officials must now consider the offender's entire driving record when someone seeks reinstatement of a revoked license. Five or more DWI convictions, or three convictions if there is also a serious accident on the record, results in a lifetime denial. Assemblyman Jim Tedisco, who has pushed for tougher regulations, believes these rules are a good first step.

Data shows that 500 fatal accidents in the state have been caused by licensed drivers with three or more DWI convictions. The regulations are expected to affect around 20,000 drivers and will take effect immediately.

These regulations only affect those with multiple convictions. However, as many people know too well, just one extra drink at dinner or at a friend's party, even if you feel fine, can lead to a DUI. Conviction of a DWI carries with it long-term legal penalties and possible personal and professional repercussions. This makes it very important for those facing DWI charges to understand their legal rights and options.
