New York to take part in nationwide DWI crackdown

At the direction of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York state is participating in the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. It runs from Aug. 18 to Sept. 5 to coincide with the Labor Day holiday. During this period, both state and local police will work together to emphasize enforcement of impaired driving laws.

Investor charged with DWI and cocaine possession

A prominent New York hedge fund investor was charged with drunk driving, speeding and cocaine possession on Aug. 13. The 35-year-old man was arrested after he was involved in a two-car accident in the Hamptons at 3 a.m. Because the man refused to take a breath test after the accident, authorities in East Hampton suspended his driver's license.

Hedge fund executive accused of DUI after collision

A 35-year-old hedge fund executive was accused of driving drunk in New York on Aug. 13. The Kerrisdale Capital Management founder and chief executive officer was involved in a two-car accident at about 3 a.m. in the Hamptons. It was reported that that the accused driver collided with a Ford SUV while he was traveling on Montauk Highway near Bluff Road.

Woman charged with DWI after crashing into airport building

A 30-year-old New York woman is facing a raft of charges including counts of criminal mischief and assault after she lost control of her car and crashed into a building at John F. Kennedy International Airport on the morning of Aug. 3. Port Authority police say that the woman admitted to consuming large amounts of alcohol while attending a party the night before.

Study shows Uber has no effect on drunk driving fatalities

Many New York residents use ride-sharing apps like Uber to get home after a night of drinking. Although a lot of people claim that Uber has prevented them from driving drunk, the introduction of the ride-sharing service may not have had any measureable effect on drunk driving fatality rates. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology showed that alcohol-related traffic fatalities have not decreased because of Uber.

Reporter charged with DWI and leaving the scene

A reporter for a New York daily tabloid was taken into custody on July 20 after police determined that he had left the scene of an accident. The 32-year-old man was subsequently charged with driving while intoxicated after a breath test administered at a Manhattan police station allegedly revealed his blood alcohol level to be .211 percent, more than double the legal limit.

Man facing several charges after New York traffic stop

A 27-year-old man was taken into custody after he was observed driving erratically on Post Avenue in Nassau County at about 11:18 p.m. on July 17. The man was driving a 2001 Honda, and police say that there was a 3-week-old baby in an unrestrained child seat at the time.

Implied consent laws and breath test refusals

When a New York resident is pulled over for suspicion of drunk driving, a police officer may request a breath sample. While many drivers do take the breath test, at least 20 percent refuse. Due to implied consent laws, these drivers risk losing their license and other potential penalties.

MADD praises Uber for helping prevent drunk driving

Some New York residents may recall that Mothers Against Drunk Drivers introduced the concept of a designated driver about three decades ago. Now, technology and new ways of thinking about transport means that there are other options available beyond having a driver along who is not drinking. Uber has positioned itself as a significant force in reducing drunk driving because it is such an easily available option.
