Dutchess County police consider speed in teen accident

Everybody speeds once in a while. Maybe you're running late to work or have to catch a flight and decide it's worth the risk to go a few miles above the speed limit to be on time. After all, most people who speed don't get caught. Those who do, however, face expensive fines. Moreover, car accidents resulting from speeding violations can lead to serious negative legal consequences.

5 teenagers injured in speed-related accident

Poughkeepsie readers may have heard of a recent accident in the nearby town of Gallatin. Five teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19, including the driver of the vehicle, were hospitalized after the Toyota Camry in which they were traveling went off the road and rolled over into a nearby wooded area.

Last month, a 20-year-old Poughkeepsie man led New Jersey State Police on a high-speed chase without a front tire. Needless to say, once the police caught up to him he faced a number of related charges such as resisting arrest and possession of mushrooms and marijuana; and traffic violations including speeding and DUI.

New York says, 'Hang up your hand-held'

New York State Police issued 3,172 tickets for texting and driving violations during the last week of April. Of those, 105 were in Dutchess County. The second Operation Hang Up was funded by Governor Cuomo's Traffic Safety Committee through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Distracted Driving Enforcement Grant. The goal is to allow state police and other law enforcement organizations focus on distracted driving traffic violations and supplement their regular enforcement efforts.

Police to enforce school bus safety throughout Dutchess Co.

Throughout Dutchess County and the entire state, local police officers and state troopers will be riding the school bus on Wednesday. Operation Safe Stop is a statewide program intended to educate drivers about motorist safety near school busses. Officers throughout the county will be monitoring drivers as passengers on school busses, following the busses, or positioned at bus stops with a history of numerous illegal passing complaints.
