Plan ahead: DWI crackdown during Fourth of July

It is no secret that Fourth of July is a holiday enjoyed by millions throughout the country. Barbeques, boating and booze seem to go together at this time. However, for those in New York during the Fourth, it is important to plan a sober ride as there is a statewide focus on stopping drunk drivers.

What Are "Stop-DWI Crackdown Weekends?"

A number of years ago, an organization in New York called the New York State STOP-DWI Association, Inc. started a program during which focuses on increasing the number of law enforcement officials who are out taking action against suspected drunk drivers. These "Stop-DWI Crackdown Weekends" occur throughout the year around holidays that are known to be especially celebrated, such as Fourth of July, Halloween, St. Patrick's Day, and many other federal and cultural holidays.

This initiative was not only introduced to provide consequences to those who drink and drive, but to encourage holiday revelers to drive safe.

What Does This Mean For You?

Drinking responsibly is smart at all times of the year. However, it is especially important during Fourth of July to ensure you have a safe ride home and do not get behind the wheel if you have been drinking. You will see more police cars on the road and there will be sobriety checkpoints throughout the Hudson Valley.

What Should You Do If You Are Stopped?

It is essential to be calm and cooperative with law enforcement if you are stopped during one of these crackdown weekends. DWI stops happen, arrests happen. If you are charged with driving while intoxicated, a breath or chemical test refusal or another alcohol or drug-related traffic violation or crime, get in touch with an experienced criminal defense attorney. A lawyer can ensure your rights are protected and examine all aspects of the situation that led to the charges you may be facing.
