You can get a traffic ticket if you don't move over

In New York, drivers are required to slow down for emergency vehicles displaying red or white emergency lights on all types roads. If you are on a parkway or highway, however, you are required to move over and slow down for emergency or hazard vehicles with flashing lights, so long as you can move over safely. This includes moving over for police cars and hazard vehicles that may be stopped to help another driver on the road.

Researchers invent tool that detects THC levels in drivers

New York residents might want to know that a new device that detects THC, the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, in a driver's saliva was invented by Stanford University researchers. Since marijuana has been legalized in over 20 states and more are set to vote on this issue in November, the "potalyzer" device was created to help officers perform field tests on drivers suspected of marijuana impairment.

Aggravated vehicular assault in New York

Motorists in New York may face vehicular assault charges when they cause serious injuries to others while driving under the intoxicated influence of alcohol or drugs. However, they could receive a stronger aggravated vehicular assault charge, which is a class C felony, in some situations. This is a very serious charge and can lead to a custodial sentence of up to 15 years in addition to fines and a lengthy driving ban.

New York to take part in nationwide DWI crackdown

At the direction of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York state is participating in the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. It runs from Aug. 18 to Sept. 5 to coincide with the Labor Day holiday. During this period, both state and local police will work together to emphasize enforcement of impaired driving laws.
