Chris Kattan charged with DWI after accident

New York residents probably know Chris Kattan best for his work on the hit comedy show 'Saturday Night Live," but the 43-year-old entertainer has recently been the subject of media attention of a different kind. Kattan was taken into custody by police on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after being involved in a traffic accident. The events took place on Feb. 10 at about 1 a.m. in Encino, California.

Police reportedly received a 911 call from a woman telling them that a sedan was being driven erratically on the 101 freeway, and the caller told them that the car was moving slowly and weaving from lane to lane. According to a report from the California Highway Patrol, the star's luxury car then entered a construction zone and struck a stationary Department of Transportation vehicle. The DOT vehicle was unoccupied at the time, and Kattan was not injured in the collision.

Kattan allegedly told officers that he had taken prescription drugs prior to the accident, and video footage emerged online of him performing poorly in field sobriety tests. He was subsequently charged with suspicion of DUI before being booked into the Van Nuys jail. The 'Night at the Roxbury" star remained in custody until about 7:30 a.m. when he was released after posting bail.

Many people suspected of driving while intoxicated have had little prior experience dealing with law enforcement, and they sometimes make admissions that could potentially harm them. A criminal defense attorney would likely advise any individual facing possible criminal charges to remember that they have a constitutional right to remain silent. Without incriminating statements, many DWI cases rely on the results of field-sobriety and toxicology tests. This kind of evidence is not always reliable, and a defense attorney may question its validity.
