New York man involved in previous DWI crash booked again

Some people who are taken into custody for driving while intoxicated continue to have legal troubles related to the consumption of drugs and alcohol. A man who was released from jail following a fatal DWI-related car accident has been charged again, this time with drug possession and threatening to shoot another person outside a nightclub in Queens.

The 32-year-old man appears to be a repeat DWI offender and allegedly has a prior record of drug possession. He is currently also facing charges related to a June 2013 car accident that left an elderly man critically injured. According to available information, the man lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a flower shop in the East Village. The owner of the shop suffered a traumatic brain injury and passed away approximately two weeks before this report.

The 32-year-old defendant was charged with driving while under the influence of drugs for that accident but released on bail. If convicted of the charges pending against him, the man could face serious penalties including jail time, a revoked driver's license and up to $10,000 in fines. He could also be subjected to a wrongful death suit filed by the family of the man who died.

No matter how many times a person gets in trouble with the law, the individual is entitled to a fair trial. It was unknown at the time of the report if the man had acquired legal representation. However, an attorney may be able to help him mitigate the consequences of a conviction by negotiating with the prosecuting attorney for lesser charges in exchange for his participation in a rehabilitation program. This option could help the man overcome a drug and alcohol problem, which may reduce the likelihood of future offenses.
