Bobby Brown faces new DWI charges

The evidence presented in a drunk driving case, including field sobriety tests, affects the DWI defense. Those facing these kinds of accusations should be sure to fully understand all of their rights and obligations under the law before deciding how to proceed when charged with DWI.

Poughkeepsie readers may be aware that Bobby Brown, the famous ex-husband of singer Whitney Houston, was arrested for driving under the influence on Oct. 24. This was the 43-year-old singer's second drunk driving-related charge in the past seven months. According to police, Brown was stopped by officers in California around 1 a.m. for a traffic violation. The officer reportedly observed signs of intoxication and said Brown failed a field sobriety test, as well as a breath test. He was booked and then released soon after on a $25,000 bail, according to authorities.

This arrest comes after his previous March 26 run in with officers, when he was reportedly stopped for driving while on his cellphone, and the cop noticed the smell of alcohol. He was ordered to go to rehab as part of his plea agreement for that arrest. Brown also served time in 1996 for drunk driving charges related to a car accident.

Drunk driving charges can carry serious penalties, and it is important that those accused understand how all of the evidence in the case, as well as the method in which it was obtained, affects the defense strategy. There is the possibility of inaccurate field sobriety tests, and the entire incident needs to be thoroughly examined, especially in the case of charges stemming from traffic stops.
